Abstract

Foot rot is a multifactorial disease in dairy cows which commonly necessitates the use of antibiotics. The avoidance of the use of antibiotics to treat dairy cows is important to keep antibiotic residues out of the food chain of humans. In this case series, local treatment of diseased hooves with the Chinese herbal medicine Xue Jie (Sanguis Draconis) without the use of antibiotics was evaluated for efficacy of treatment of this disease. Eighteen dairy cattle that were severely lame from foot rot underwent trimming of the diseased hooves which were then sealed with the Chinese herbal medicine, Xue Jie (Sanguis Draconis), a plant resin with antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and antithrombotic effects. Out of 18 animals, 14 (78 %) had complete resolution of hoof lesions after 1 treatment and an additional 3 animals (94% total) had resolution of hoof lesions after the second treatment. There was only 1 treatment failure in the study (hoof lesions and lameness still present after 2 treatments). This series of clinical cases demonstrated that Xue Jie (Sanguis Draconis), was both efficient and clinically efficacious in treatment of cattle foot rot and should be considered for use, particularly when antibiotics are to be avoided.
