A seven year old, 400 kg, intact female, bay, Arabian horse presented for a mass on the ramus of the right mandible. The
horse was given a poor prognosis because surgical intervention was not an option. The clients did not want to pursue
chemotherapy due to its toxic side-effects. Using acupuncture and Chinese herbal therapy the mass completely resolved
after 4 months. The acupuncture points used to treat this mare were: GV-14, LI-4, LI-10, LI-11, LU-7, LU-9, BL-13, BL-
20, BL-21, BL-23, BL-26, BL-67, SI-3, ST-36, ST-44, and Bai Hui. The Chinese herbal formulas prescribed were a
modification of Nei Xiao Luo Li San (Max Formula), a modification of Nei Xiao Wan (Stasis Breaker), and a modification
of Si Jun Zi Tang (Wei Qi Booster) . The purpose of this case report was to demonstrate the use of acupuncture and
Chinese herbal therapy as an alternative treatment for equine melanoma.
