Between December 2008 and November 2010, 8 toy breed dogs (3 males and 5 females) ranging in age from 4 months to 13 years were presented with radiographic findings consistent with fractures involving the radius and ulna (6 dogs), humerus (1 dog) and tibia (1 dog). Three of these dogs presented with non-healing fractures of the humerus (1 dog), tibia (1 dog) and radius/ulna (1 dog) subsequent to surgical procedures. Meta-splints were applied to front limb fractures and Quicksplint applied to hind limb fractures in a routine manner. All patients were given a novel Chinese herbal medicine called OsteoMenda, a proprietary blend of 20 herbs. Each study participant received a dose of 0.5 grams extracted herbal powder per 10 pounds body weight twice daily until complete fracture resolution was confirmed by radiographs. All eight dogs’ initial fractures healed without complications in 60 days or less with an average healing time of 49 days. The three dogs with prior non-healing fractures had complete resolution of the presenting lesion and did not require additional surgery to remove the hardware. The herbal supplement OsteoMend can be a safe and effective treatment to promote fracture healing in dogs and may have particular use in poorly healing fractures in toy breed dogs.
