Comparison of the TCVM Lung System and the Lungs of Conventional Biomedicine

Bruce Ferguson DVM, MS

Abstract

Practitioners of traditional Chinese veterinary medicine (TCVM) are familiar with the differences between TCVM Zang-fu organs and conventional organs, but other people may become confused. The Heart, Pericardium, Small Intestine, Spleen, Stomach, Lung, Large Intestine, Kidney, Bladder, Liver and Gallbladder are TCVM systems that have the same name as conventional biomedical organs. The Triple Heater (San Jiao) system is the only organ system in TCVM that does not. When an animal is diagnosed with a TCVM Kidney Deficiency, both clients and veterinary colleagues, only trained in conventional anatomy and physiology, may become confused and believe that the conventional kidney organ is affected. Although there may be misunderstandings because of the differences between TCVM and conventional biomedical organs, these organs are often more alike than one might initially realize. The TCVM Lung system and the conventional biomedical lung organ will be used to illustrate similarities and differences in the 2 paradigms of medicine.
