Abstract

Zhi Gan Cao Tang (Honey-Fried Licorice Decoction) is a tonic herbal formula that is considered to be one of the most effective for treatment of animals with cardiac disease in veterinary medicine. The author has successfully used this formula for over 15 years to treat congestive heart failure in dogs and cats. Because of its ability to maintain a normal rhythmic heart rate, it is also called Fu Mai Tang, meaning, “Restore the Pulse Decoction”. It can also be used to treat Lung Deficiency syndromes and is a well-balanced tonic formula that can be used long term. The original source of the formula is from the Shang Han Lun (Discussion of Cold-Induced Disorders) by Zhang Zhong-Jing in the Eastern Han Dynasty. The Chinese therapeutic actions of this formula are to tonify Qi, nourish Yin, tonify Blood and restore the pulse.
