Tips for the Administration of Herbal Medicines to Small Mammals

Cynthia West

Abstract

Small mammals, which come in a variety of shapes and sizes (e.g. rabbits, ferrets, guinea pigs, hamsters, mice, hedgehogs), have become increasingly popular as pets and may be presented to the small animal veterinary practitioner for a number of health conditions. Common ailments encountered include skin and ear conditions, urinary, respiratory and gastrointestinal disorders, all of which can be effectively treated using herbal medicines. In recent years, owners are increasingly seeking more natural treatments, with potentially fewer adverse side effects for these delicate small mammals. Professional veterinary advice on the proper administration and appropriate utilization of herbal medicines can be a valuable addition to integrative care for small mammals. This article provides helpful guidelines for administration of herbal medications to these unusual patients, doses to use, duration of dosing, and monitoring small mammals during the course of herbal medicine treatment. With the knowledge of how to safely prescribe, dose and help the caretaker with easier administration techniques and options, the small animal practitioner can make a significant contribution to restoring and maintaining the health and quality of life of these diminutive, less commonly seen patients.
