Historically, dogs, cats and guinea pigs with neurological disorders have been treated with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, glucocorticosteroid drugs, opioid drugs (i.e. tramadol), drugs for neuropathic pain (i.e. gabapentin) and B vitamins, with variable success. When treatment for neurological disorders using these standard medications did not give reliable results, TCVM as an alternative treatment for neurological disease in animals was instituted by the author’s clinic. Over a 6 month period all neurological cases that were poorly responsive to conventional treatment for at least 7 days (range 7 to 30 days) were treated with Chinese herbal medicine and acupuncture. All dogs, cats and guinea pigs that were treated with this integrative therapy were evaluated for clinical outcome after treatment. A total of 94 cases were enrolled and underwent treatment with acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicines with a percent success rate of 93%.
