The Use of Acupuncture as Adjunct Treatment for Colic in a 24 Year Old Arabian Gelding

Barbara A. Kintner, DVM

Abstract

A 24-year old Arabian gelding with no past or present history of health issues presented for what appeared to be a mild case of impaction colic. Both dry needle and electroacupuncture were used to alleviate pain and to encourage the movement of impacted fecal material in conjunction with conventional therapy. Despite evidence that the acupuncture treatments were effective in stimulating intestinal motility and moving some dry stool, the gelding was ultimately referred to a university teaching hospital for further evaluation. Exploratory surgery revealed the underlying cause of colic to be an enterolith. Following surgery, acupuncture was used to help the horse regain appetite, thirst, and energy. This case represents an example of how conventional medicine and acupuncture can be integrated to benefit the equine patient.
