Abstract

Ren Shen Yang Ying Tang (Ginseng Decoction to Nourish the Nutritive Qi) is a tonic formula that treats Qi and Blood deficiencies accompanied by instability of the Heart. The original source of Ren Shen Yang Ying Tang is from Tai Ping Hui Min He Ji Ju Fang (Imperial Grace Formulary of the Tai Ping Era) by the Imperial Medical Department in 1078-85. It is known by alternate names, two of the most common are Ren Shen Yang Rong Tang and Yang Ying Tang. This formula is a modification of Shi Quan Da Bu Tang (All Inclusive Great Tonifying Decoction) with additional herbs to nourish the Heart and quiet the spirit. This syndrome usually follows exhaustion of the body from age, injury, chronic disease, chemotherapy or surgery in which both the Qi and the Blood are depleted. Ren Shen Yang Ying Tang can be used to treat any condition with Qi and Blood deficiencies but especially those that affect the spirit or Shen. General weakness, lethargy, exercise intolerance, poor appetite, poor digestion and weight loss are all signs of Qi Deficiency. General signs of Blood Deficiency include a pale tongue, a thin, weak pulse, dandruff, dry skin, nails/hooves and hair coat. Significant Blood Deficiency can lead to a lack of nourishment to the Heart causing nervousness, anxiety, fearfulness, restlessness, insomnia and pacing at night.
