Constitution Types and Career Choices

Abstract

The choices we make, the way we approach life and how we deal with stress are affected by our underlying constitutions. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) there are Five Elements: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water. Each is associated with certain personality traits. Everyone has all Five Elements within them, but usually 1 or 2 Elements are predominant. Understanding constitutional types may also help preserve Jing, when making life-changing decisions. The amount of Congenital Jing is limited to the amount that an individual is born with and should be protected because it is essential to maintain life. Stressors like over-work, poor eating habits and lack of sleep that are associated with some careers may deplete Jing. Precautions must be taken when making changes in a career to allow time for nourishment and rest. Picking a career path that is more in alignment with one’s constitution will not only promote a feeling of wellbeing, but also help to preserve Jing.
