Si Wu Tang (SWT) is a well-known Chinese herbal formula that has been used for over 1200 years. The history of its formulation and applications in clinical practice are reviewed. An overview of the scientific literature demonstrating the positive effects of SWT on the hemopoietic and cardiovascular systems, regulation of immunity, resistance to hypoxia,
protection against free radical and radiation damage, regulation of uterine movement, reduction of hyperlipidemia, resistance to toxicities, and reduction of mutations leading to cancer are presented in this review.
