Abstract

Zuo Gui Wan is an important Chinese herbal medicine with potent effects on the Zang-fu organ, Kidney. The chief herb, Shu Di Huang (Rehmannia) tonifies Kidney Yin and Jing (Essence) and fills the Marrow. It can be used to treat a number of clinical conditions associated with the Kidney, such as: mental dullness, confusion, disorientation, pacing at night, impaired hearing, soreness and weakness of the back/stifles, poor hair coat, weak constitution, developmental orthopedic and dental abnormalities, urinary incontinence, increased thirst, excessive panting and a red tongue with thready rapid pulse. This brief review includes Zuo Gui Wan’s individual herbs and their actions, clinical veterinary uses, and a few current veterinary and human clinical/research studies.
