Shen Qi Yi Mu Tang is a Chinese herbal formula composed of Dang Shen (Codonopsis Radix), Huang Qi (Astragalus Radix), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Chuan Xiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Jin Yin Hua (Lonicerae Flos), Lian Qiao (Forsythiae Fructus) and Yi Mu Cao (Leonuri Herba). To investigate the effects of Shen Qi Yi Mu Tang on the antioxidant status of postpartum dairy cows, 20 postpartum dairy cows, from the same farm, were randomly divided into control and treatment groups. The cows in the treatment group were gavaged with 480 g of the Chinese herbal medicine Shen Qi Yi Mu Tang on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd days after calving. Blood samples were collected on 1st, 5th and 15th days after calving and serum superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activity, total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC) and malondialdehyde (MDA) concentrations were analyzed. The results showed that the SOD activity, GSH-Px activity and T-AOC of dairy cows in the treatment group were elevated significantly compared with the control group (p<0.01 or p<0.05). The MDA levels declined significantly compared to the control group (p<0.01). From these findings it was concluded that Shen Qi Yi Mu Tang enhances the antioxidant capacity of postpartum dairy cows.
