Qigong for the TCVM Practitioner: Activating Extraordinary Vessels

Bruce Ferguson, DVM, MS

Abstract

Qigong was introduced as the science and art of cultivating the body’s internal energy or Qi in the February 2009 issue of the AJTCVM. There it was stated that the term “Qigong” was derived from the words “Qi” or energy and “Gong” and that Qigong could be defined as “any training or study dealing with Qi which takes a long time and a lot of effort”. The ability to concentrate and generate consistent useful energy can benefit veterinary acupuncturists, herbalists, food therapy and Tui-na practitioners and the patients they serve. The Eight Extraordinary Vessels have multiple functions which may be enhanced by Qigong training. This article explores exercises to activate the Eight Extraordinary Vessels to achieve beneficial effects on the body, mind and spirit of the TCVM practitioner.
